Inflammation And Its Causes

image

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is your body’s response to stress - whether from your diet, lifestyle or environment. Think of what happens when you catch a cold. You may experience inflammation in the form of a fever as your body heats up to eradicate the effects of the invading virus. This kind of inflammation is good, but the modern epidemic of chronic, low-grade inflammation destroys the balance in your body. When your body’s systems experience a constant inflammatory response, you become more susceptible to aging and disease.

What Causes Inflammation?

  • Chronic Low-Grade Food Allergies or Food Sensitivities
  • An Imbalance of Bacteria in your gut.
  • Physical, Emotional & Psychological Stress
  • Environmental Toxicity from our air, water, food pollutants and toxic metals.
  • Diet & Lifestyle Too much fat, sugar, and protein in your diet, constant dehydration, consumption of too many sodas or caffeine, inactivity, and lack of sleep can all increase inflammation in your body

The Elbow - Injuries & Causes of Pain

image

Because the arm is used for so many common activities, elbow pain can cause significant disruption. The most common types of elbow pain are known as “tennis elbow,” which makes it difficult to grip objects, and “golfer’s elbow,” which causes pain on the inside of the elbow joint. Overuse or repeated pressure on the elbow joint can cause small tears to form in the soft tissue, particularly where the tendons anchor to bone. If a number of these tears occur over a period of time, they can cause discomfort and reduced movement of the elbow joint.

Causes of Elbow Pain

  • Overuse of a screwdriver or other twisting/hand-turning motion
  • Repeated pressure on the elbow joint
  • Tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis
  • Fractures, dislocations, nerve irritations (caused by accidents)

At Spine and Sports Medicine in midtown Manhattan, we know how to treat elbow pain and injury. Our multidisciplinary approach incorporates state-of-the-art medical technology, the finest healthcare expertise and comprehensive physical therapy to return you to a pain-free and active lifestyle.

Diet Soda - It's Not Helping You Lose Weight

image

Men’s Health News “The Truth About Diet Soda”

  • Diet soda drinkers experienced 70% increase in belly bulge versus non-diet drinkers
  • Drinking diet soda may be a sign of unhealthy eating habits
  • Artificial sweetener could be linked with impairing taste sensation and causing “sweet tooth”

One major misconception we have about food is that we’re making healthy choices by eating our favorite junk foods in “diet” or “low-cal” form. These diet options generally contain artificial sweeteners that can have negative side effects on our health. Instead of drinking “diet” or “low-cal”, we need to be eating and drinking REAL FOOD AND BEVERAGES.

Lifting Techniques to Avoid Back Pain & Injuries

    image

Improper lifting of heavy objects causes many back injuries. People may believe that they know what they’re doing. “I’ve been lifting and moving heavy things all my life without trouble!”, they say. Unfortunately, people may not lift properly for a long time and realize it only when the back is damaged enough to cause pain.

If you must lift a heavy object, first make sure you can carry the load. Then make sure you know where exactly you’ll be moving the object to and choose the shortest route possible.

Here are a few important tips for when lifting or moving a load:

    • When bending down, always bend at the knees–never at the waist.
    • Keep the object close to your body.
    • Don’t twist your body.
    • Avoid lifting over your head or over an obstruction.
    • When lifting a heavy object below chest level, always tighten your abdomen muscles to place less of the load on your spine.
    • When moving a heavy object, push it instead of pulling it.
    • Whenever possible, use a cart to carry your luggage.
    • If the load is too heavy, ask for help.

Over the centuries, it has been documented that the insertion of a very fine needle at a given point has a very predictable effect on the energy that passes through tat point, restoring balance in the meridian.

Rotator Cuff Injuries: Common in Artists & Athletes

    image

Rotator cuff injuries are among the most common and painful shoulder-related injuries in adults. They are common in people who lift their arms a lot; artists, painters, athletes, and physical laborers. The rotator cuff (or musculotendinous cuff) is made up of tendons and muscles covering the shoulder joint. It helps keep the shoulder in place and works to lift and move the shoulder. Rotator cuff injuries treated at Spine and Sports Medicine vary greatly in severity.

    Rotator Cuff Injuries

    • Mild - A mild impingement may occur when the shoulder blade rubs, or impinges on the rotator cuff when the arm is lifted.
    • Medium - The continued rubbing of the cuff can cause tendonitis, bursitis, or a partial tear in the rotator cuff.
    • Severe - The rotator cuff can be completely torn, a very serious injury.

Signs of a Rotator Cuff Injury

    • Limited movement of the shoulder
    • Dull ache in the upper arm and shoulder.
    • Mild pain increasing over time.
