Imagine this. When you get here it’s all about you. You’re “it”. The entire visit with your physical therapist or doctor is centered around giving you an experience uncommon in today’s impersonal medical world. After all, you are a dignified human being with specific needs that require talented people who truly care, delivered in a spa-like environment that is first class in every respect.

Our goal at Spine and Sports is to markedly improve your life. Pain relief is usually the first step. Restoring your human potential and optimizing your health is next. We continuously ask ourselves the question, “how can we best serve your health needs?” We live in that question. And the answer, in short, is always the same: a commitment to excellence in everything we do. Excellence is the answer. It’s what we value most. As such, our staff is continuously upgrading their knowledge base in order to give you the best.

Spine and Sports combines several specialities: physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, dentists, and other rehab specialists. Each patient is assigned to their own personal physical therapist who knows and understands each patients’ personal and often complex needs. The physical therapists’ and doctor’s goal is to help you move from pain, injury, or dysfunction to pain-free restoration of function in the shortest possible time.

Dr. Tammy Bohne (Chiropractic) attended New York Chiropractic College. As a child her father was misdiagnosed with MS. He endured many tests and complicated procedures before going to a Chiropractor who was highly recommended. The Chiropractor found that he did not have MS and was instead suffering from pinched nerves at the base of his neck. This sparked Dr Bohne’s fascination with the Chiropractic profession.

For the next three Saturdays NYC is shutting down over seven miles of connecting streets between the Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park between the hours of 7am and 1pm. This opens up a car-free route for walking, biking, running, and enjoying the city streets. Learn more about Summer Streets in NYC here.

Our Physical Therapy department is comprised of New York State licensed professionals with extensive knowledge and training in anatomy, physiology, and the biomechanics of the body. They know how to help you get out of pain and back in action. Our therapists use a hands-on approach in conjunction with specific modalities as needed. The most commonly used therapeutic procedures/modalities are:

  • Manual (hands-on) Therapy: Consists of myofascial release techniques, stretching of restricted structures and specific strengthening of weak muscles, soft tissue and joint mobilization/ manipulation, muscle energy and Mulligan techniques. They help restore your back, neck, or other painful areas to the youthful pain-free resilience.
  • Pain Management: Use of moist heat, cryotherapy, ultrasound, phonophoresis, Iontophoresis, and massage.
  • Therapeutic Exercises: Customized for each condition including strengthening, stabilizing, and stretching restricted structures to restore normal pain-free range of motion. The exercises improve movement and proper muscle balance.
  • Postural Corrections: This addresses behavior modification, postural exercise, and self-awareness. We concentrate on correcting musculoskeletal derangements.
  • Home Management Program: A short and detailed home exercise program corresponding to the appropriate stage of condition, including the dos and don’ts of self-management.

Mid 70’s, partly cloudy, with a cool breeze. Its a beautiful day for a run in New York City. If you’re looking for a new route to explore or an adventure without the commotion, here are some of the best running routes in NYC.

"For almost 10 years (I am 22!!) I suffered from chronic ankle sprains from an old soccer injury. After seeing an orthopedist in my hometown who gave me steroid injections in my ankle joint, and a podiatrist who did the same thing, I gave up. When I moved to Atlanta for college, I tried to find another place. I got a diagnosis and inserts for my shoes. Long term, not a good solution. Finally, I started looking in the city. I saw one doctor who while nice, wasn’t personable and didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. Then I called S&S.

They got me in the same day and after seeing Dr. Kessler, I started physical therapy that day. They didn’t want to give me a quick fix - no injections, no inserts, they wanted to find a solution to make me pain free. My PT was amazing, attentive, encouraging, and tough only when he needed to be. I can walk, run, etc without pain and as long as I pay attention and take care of myself, I can even wear heels and flip flops on occasion!

I also began seeing Dr. JC for chiropractic - mostly for convenience as it was all in one office and saved me a trip.

Dr. JC spent at least 45 minutes with me finding out about my lifestyle, stressed, etc to identify where my pain was coming from and how to best address it. I went from near daily migraines, to perhaps a handful in the last 6 months. My back pain no longer drives me to taking massive amounts of anti-inflammatories or keeps me up at night.

The office is awesome, the staff are friendly and always remember your name, they are helpful and I wouldn’t put my health in any one else’s hands at this point. I’m too young to be in pain and S&S helped me with that!”
