Travel is a commonly overlooked cause of lower back pain. Air travel in particular can be hazardous to your spinal health due to severe slouching for several hours followed by dragging your suitcase through the airport. Sitting in airplane seats (which are generally ergonomically dysfunctional) compresses the discs between your vertebrae and can increase any pre-existing spinal pain or heighten a chronic condition. The hustle through the airport continues to compress your lower back, increasing the pain.
How can I prevent back pain when I travel?

Imagine this. When you get here it’s all about you. You’re “it”. The entire visit with your physical therapist or doctor is centered around giving you an experience uncommon in today’s impersonal medical world. After all, you are a dignified human being with specific needs that require talented people who truly care, delivered in a spa-like environment that is first class in every respect.
Our goal at Spine and Sports is to markedly improve your life. Pain relief is usually the first step. Restoring your human potential and optimizing your health is next. We continuously ask ourselves the question, “how can we best serve your health needs?” We live in that question. And the answer, in short, is always the same: a commitment to excellence in everything we do. Excellence is the answer. It’s what we value most. As such, our staff is continuously upgrading their knowledge base in order to give you the best.
Spine and Sports combines several specialities: physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, dentists, and other rehab specialists. Each patient is assigned to their own personal physical therapist who knows and understands each patients’ personal and often complex needs. The physical therapists’ and doctor’s goal is to help you move from pain, injury, or dysfunction to pain-free restoration of function in the shortest possible time.

Dr. Brian Kessler, Medical Director at Spine and Sports Medicine
“New York City is tough on the body. Hard work and long commutes cause not only aches and pains, but also trauma to the body. I believe in helping people return to a pain-free life. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to receive the highest quality pain management and rehabilitation. Whatever the cause of your pain, we’re here to help.”
Experience
Dr. Kessler handled spine, orthopedic and head trauma while serving as a Surgical House Physician at seven New York City area hospitals and trauma centers, including Wyckoff Heights Hospital, King’s County Medical Center, and the Elmhurst Hospital Center, a teaching affiliate of the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
Dr. Kessler previously owned and directed an urgent and primary care and ambulatory center in Rockland County, NY, which was subsequently acquired by Beth Israel Medical Center to support their premier healthcare network.
Combining the skill of running a topnotch medical practice in this city with depth of experience in orthopedics and trauma of the spine and head, Dr. Kessler works hard to be an excellent New York physician who understands the importance of maintaining good health.

“The Shoulder is a very common site of injury for ‘weekend warriors’. In addition to the superficial deltoid muscles which do the bulk of the movement of this joint, the smaller, internal rotator cuff group is highly susceptible to injury. In fact, it is estimated that by the time we reach the age of 60, 60% of people will have some degree of measurable damage to one of the four rotator cuff muscles.” —Brian Kessler, M.D., Medical Director for Spine & Sports Medicine of NYC.
The shoulder is the most movable joint in the body and the potential causes of shoulder pain are multiple. Most shoulder problems involve the soft tissues — muscles, tendons, and ligaments — that hold the bones of the shoulder in place, and include swelling, inflammation, and the splitting or tearing of tendons. Degenerative conditions, such as tendonitis, bursitis or arthritis, as well as the natural aging process, can also cause shoulder pain. Because the shoulder has such a wide range of motion, problems can be worsened by sports like baseball and tennis, in which the shoulder is extensively used. Other shoulder conditions include shoulder dislocation, shoulder separation, fracture, and “frozen shoulder syndrome,” which occurs when the shoulder is immobilized due to a prior injury.
Our physicians and chiropractors specialize in treating pain and the disorders that cause pain. Our physical therapists are experts in rehabilitation and will help you learn how you can help yourself recover from shoulder injury. When necessary, we will prescribe medication or provide corticosteroid injections to lessen pain and quicken recovery. Whatever the cause of your shoulder pain, the professionals at Spine and Sports Medicine will diagnose and treat it using cutting-edge technology and the finest medical attention.

Dr. Tammy Bohne (Chiropractic) attended New York Chiropractic College. As a child her father was misdiagnosed with MS. He endured many tests and complicated procedures before going to a Chiropractor who was highly recommended. The Chiropractor found that he did not have MS and was instead suffering from pinched nerves at the base of his neck. This sparked Dr Bohne’s fascination with the Chiropractic profession. She is a firm believer that the natural way is the better way. Keeping the body in a state where it can take care of itself is what she teaches her patients here at Spine and Sports Medicine.
